Every year at the Kamehameha Day parade in June and the Aloha Week parade in September, the horses and female riders adorned with the colors and flowers symbolizing each island shine brightly. These are the Pau Riders. "Pau" means skirt in Hawaiian. Mounted on horseback in their brightly colored long skirts, they captivate the crowds that line the streets of Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki, where the festivities reach their peak.

I think the parades in Hawaii are really well-presented. They know how to entertain the audience.

Incidentally, it is said that long ago, during the time of the ancient Hawaiian monarchy, it was common to see women riding horses. A remnant of that era is vividly revived in modern times. We share a space from Hawaii's distant past, right here on the asphalt.
