A 15-minute drive from Waikiki, the Honolulu Museum of Art is located in downtown Honolulu. Founded in 1927 by Mrs. Charles Cook, a missionary's wife who immigrated to Hawaii, it is Hawaii's largest art museum, built on a collection amassed from around the world. It's astonishing that it now houses nearly 50,000 works of art. Immediately upon entering, you'll find a section dedicated to Impressionist artists, including works by Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Picasso. I've visited many times, and I've stood before Matisse's painting of a woman reading a book. On the table are roughly painted vases and tulips. The colors of the flowers are applied outside the lines, and the grid lines on the wall behind are created by scraping paint off the handle of a brush. I've always been inspired by the idea that painting can be done freely.

This painting was created by coloring the sky first. A strange sky appeared, and the painting's progression was traced based on this sky.
