I lived in Hawaii for over 20 years, painting in a small cottage in Nuuanu, surrounded by woods. Koko was always by my side as I painted. Koko was a cat that came from the Big Island of Hawaii, a Somali cat, a long-haired breed of the Egyptian Abyssinian, which is said to be the origin of cats.

It had thick, fluffy fur and a tail that resembled that of a fox.

KOKO was my painting goddess, and when I wasn't around, she would sleep on top of the unfinished paintings on my desk.

When she was a kitten, she meowed like a bell, and when she walked away, she looked like Marilyn Monroe.

Then I sat in front of the door and watched Popo's garden, bathed in dazzling green light, as if I were watching a movie.

Thinking of KOKO, I drew a Somali kitten.
